Sharks! Sink Your Teeth In!
Calvert Marine Museum
Solomons, Maryland
July 2021 to January 2023
This exhibit juxtaposed the Miocene fossil sharks and rays found in southern Maryland with their extant modern analogs living in the Atlantic Ocean today. Composite fossil dentitions were reconstructed to demonstrate species variation in tooth shape and to give visitors a better visual image of the fossil taxa they represent. Adjacent to each composite dentition was a modern jaw from a direct descendent or close ecological analog and "fin facts" that provided visitors with interesting tidbits of information. The exhibit also included displays on tooth functions, predator-prey interactions, and fossils used for adornment and tools by Native Americans.
Life-Sized Megalodon Skeletal Model Update
Calvert Marine Museum
Solomons, Maryland
January 2022
The Calvert Marine Museum created the first life-sized skeletal model of Otodus megalodon in 1995. This model was largely based on the living great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias. Since then, new fossil discoveries have shed light on megalodon's dental anatomy. This exhibit update included replacing the teeth in the original model with high-quality casts of the most complete fossil dentition ever recovered.
